How do I estimate two cubic metres?
A cubic metre is an item or items 1 metre long by 1 metre wide by 1 metre high. 1 metre X 1 metre X 1 metere= 1 cubic metre
2 cubic meters could be: 2 metres X 1 metre X 1 metre = 2 cubic metres
It could be any combination of lengths as long as all three dimensions multiplied together equals 2. For example; 4 metres X 1 metre X 0.5 metre = 2 cubic metres

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I have just built a new house, how do I get my bins?
A. A waste service cannot be started at a new dwelling until the final inspection has been completed by Council's building inspectors. This is usually booked by your certifier after the completion of the final occupation certificate. Firstly check that this has been done by calling the Environment and Planning Department on 0248 680888 . Please note that the bins are not delivered automatically. A letter will be sent to the owner after Resource Recovery has been advised to start the waste service by Environment and Planning. This letter is to advise that the waste charges will commence and requesting that the owner make contact to arrange the delivery of the bins.
Note: It is possible to start a waste service if an interim occupation certificate has been completed and is signed off by the Council's building inspectors.
A. Refer to the attachments for Waste and Recycling for possible reasons that the bin has not been collected. If it appears the bin has been missed, this needs to be reported within 24 hours (ie the following day, or Monday if collection day is Friday)
Q. How much is the waste management component of my rates?
A. In 2009/10 the waste management charge is $227 per year for a fortnightly service, $276 per year for a standard weekly service and $415 per year for a Multiwaste service.
Q. Do I take the bins with me when I move?
A. No, if you move DO NOT TAKE THE BIN(S) with you. The bins are allocated by serial number to each property (not the owner) and rated accordingly.
Q. I'm renting and there are no bins at the property! How do I obtain them?
A. If you are renting and there are no bins at your new address, you should contact your Real Estate Agent, they will arrange delivery for you.
Q. My rates notice has domestic waste charges on it, why do I have to use this service?
A. Providing the property is within Council's waste collection area, Domestic Waste Services are a mandatory requirement placed upon Council through State Government Legislation.

Council Trial Organics Collections:
Council is trialling a fortnightly garden organics collection service, similar to the half-yearly Council clean-ups. At the end of the trial period an assessment will be made of the demand for such a service and the feasibility of operating it on a more permanent basis. Other options for garden organics disposal will also be considered.
The cost is $20 (incl. GST) for 2 cubic metres (approximately 2 level standard trailer loads). Bookings and credit card payments can be made by phoning the Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) on 4868 0500 by 4.00 pm on the Friday before the Monday collection. Payment can also be made at the Civic Centre. If payment is made at the Civic Centre, a booking must still be made with the RRC, quoting the receipt number. A 1% surcharge applies for credit card payments.
This service is only available to residents who have a Council domestic waste collection.
The following conditions apply. In the interest of safety and hygiene, these conditions will be strictly enforced.
Only one collection per residence per fortnight.
- Material must not exceed 2 cubic metres (approximately 2 level standard trailer loads).
- Materials must be organic, less than 200mm in diameter, no longer than 1800mm in length and capable of being lifted by two people.
- Small pieces should bundled together and tied with twine. It is preferred that sisal type (organic, not plastic) twine is used for bundles (available at hardware stores).
- Wire must not be used to bundle material.
- Leaves and grass clippings must be contained in reusable bags that will be returned to the frontage for next time.
- Bags are to be left open. Tied/closed bags will not be collected.
- Material to be placed as close to the kerb as possible but must not obstruct traffic or pedestrians.
- No wet, putrid or food wastes will be collected.
A limited number of reusable bags are available from the weighbridge at the RRC and the Customer Service desk at the Civic Centre for $1 each. These will be returned to residents during collection for reuse.
Residents are encouraged to co-operate with neighbours and pool materials to make collections more cost effective – a limit of 2 cubic metres per collection will still apply.
Further details are available by telephoning the Resource Recovery Centre between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday, on 4868 0500.
